This document is a working draft written to make the product usable in a closed beta. It has not been reviewed by a qualified lawyer and it is not legal advice. It must be reviewed before the service opens to the public, in particular for UK GDPR and EU GDPR, the age policy, user-generated content and international availability.Every member agrees to these when they join. They are short on purpose, so that nobody can say they did not read them.
1. Everyone is welcome here
The name of this community celebrates the women who started it. Membership is open to everyone, whatever their gender. Do not assume anyone’s pronouns, gender, hair type, ethnicity, religion or ability. Do not comment on any of those things unless someone raises it themselves and it is relevant to braiding their hair.
2. Helping is a gift, not a trade
Braiding someone’s hair and having yours braided are separate acts. No one owes anyone a swap. No one owes anyone an explanation for saying no, and declining a request is always an acceptable answer.
3. Turn up, or say you cannot
Someone is standing outside a hotel at six in the morning because of what you agreed. If your plans change, send a message. A short apology hours ahead is worth far more than a perfect braid.
4. Consent, every time
Ask before touching someone’s hair. Ask before taking a photograph. Ask before posting one anywhere. Stop when someone asks you to stop.
5. Keep it about the race
This is not a dating app and must not be used as one. Unwanted romantic or sexual attention will get an account removed.
6. No selling
The service is free and stays free. Do not charge for braiding arranged here, do not advertise a salon, do not recruit for anything, and do not use the conversation to sell.
7. Be honest about what you can do
Saying “I am still learning” is a perfectly good answer, and many people would rather have a willing beginner than nobody. Claiming a skill you do not have is not fair on someone racing tomorrow.
8. Look after each other’s privacy
Do not share anyone’s address, contact details, photographs or messages outside this app. What someone tells you in a private conversation stays there.
What happens if these are broken
Depending on what happened, a moderator may remove the content, warn the account, suspend it or close it. Serious safety matters are acted on immediately and may be reported to the relevant authorities.
